ATO Returns to Wigan Athletic to Deliver Gambling Harm Workshop for U21s

Our latest session with Wigan Athletic's Under-21 players combined lived experience with practical education, encouraging players to think beyond gambling itself and understand the environment they operate in as young professional footballers. As the demands of the modern game continue to evolve, the workshop highlighted the importance of making informed decisions, protecting future opportunities, and recognising the role mental wellbeing plays in both performance and life beyond football.
Players were introduced to the Against The Odds Academy Gambling Ecosystem, which explores four key areas influencing today's game:
- 24/7 Exposure
- Psychological Triggers
- Ease of Access
- Potential Consequences
Together, these themes encouraged players to consider how gambling has become increasingly embedded within sport, the factors that can influence decision-making, and the impact gambling-related harm can have on finances, wellbeing, performance and future opportunities.

We were delighted to return for our fourth consecutive season working with the academy and look forward to continuing our partnership in supporting the club's young players both on and off the pitch.
